Los Tambos Chachapoyanos

How we benefit the area

We are the only private sector organization developing an infrastructure for tourism to benefit this zone: Los Tambos Chachapoyanos. We benefit the zone rather than simply exploiting it as so often happens in areas with tourist attractions.

Los Tambos Chachapoyanos operates out of Chachapoyas and around Kuelap and Gran Vilaya, (birthplace of the Amazon). Their mission is building comfortable co op lodges with the villages. Tourist income from these lodges benefits the local people and is used to protect and restore the ruins and ancient roads of this incredible zone. Los Tambos Chachapoyanos has the ONLY lodges strategically located to access the best ruins.

We suggest that agencies that don’t want to unjustly exploit the region’s resources and people use these facilities and our land operator logistical services to access the archaeological zones.

Los Tambos Chachapoyanos (lodges of the Chachapoyans) are run by the people of Choctamal or Levanto. They guide and provide horses and logistics. They take great pride in their “hotel”. A third of the lodge income goes to projects to preserve and restore the ruins, or enhance their land for tourism.

Beyond the use of income for benefiting the zone, Los Tambos has also:

  • donated a huge generator to provide electricity to two large villages Choctamal and Longuita.
  • donated a solar electric system providing electricity to the INC (the Peruvian archaeological board) lodge facility at Kuelap.
  • donated ceramic kiln for Levanto.
  • donated a vapor barrier for the museum.
  • made and installed signs for the Inca trails.
  • provided security for some of the ruins.
  • taken trunks of medicines, school supplies for the local people
